Pericardium

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008636

A double-layered sac that encloses the heart and the proximal portions of the great blood vessels. The outer fibrous layer anchors the heart within the mediastinum, while the inner serous layer produces fluid that lubricates cardiac movement. This protective sac prevents overfilling of the heart and reduces friction during its contractions.
