Primary reference examination procedure

The procedure that gives an examination result for a nominal property, such as a blood group or a base sequence, without relying on any standard of the same kind, and that is accepted as the reference at the top of the traceability chain. It is the nominal-property counterpart of a primary reference measurement procedure for a quantity, and it is used to assign values to standards of the same kind.
