Primary succession

The ecological process of community development that occurs in an area previously devoid of life, such as newly formed volcanic rock or sand dunes. Pioneer species colonize the barren land, gradually modifying the environment to allow for the establishment of more complex communities. This process can take hundreds to thousands of years.
