Primordium

The earliest stage of development of an organ or tissue in an embryo or fetus, before it has taken on its mature form. This initial cluster of cells possesses the developmental potential to differentiate into a specific structure. For example, a limb bud is the primordium of a limb, containing the cells that will form bones, muscles, and connective tissues.
