Quenching
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013461
The deactivation of an excited state molecule or atom through interaction with another chemical species, known as the quencher. This process reduces the emission of light (fluorescence or phosphorescence) from the excited species by providing an alternative, non-radiative pathway for it to return to its ground state. The mechanism can involve energy transfer, where the quencher becomes excited, or electron transfer, which results in redox reactions.
