Radiation trapping
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009831
The re-absorption of emitted photons by other atoms or molecules within the same medium before they can escape. This phenomenon effectively increases the apparent lifetime of excited states because the energy is repeatedly absorbed and re-emitted. It is particularly noticeable in high-density atomic or molecular vapors.
