Trapping

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012273

The process of intercepting a reactive intermediate, such as a radical or carbene, by allowing it to react with a suitable trapping agent before it can undergo further reactions or decomposition. This technique provides evidence for the existence of transient species and can be used to determine their structure or reactivity. Common trapping agents include dienes for Diels-Alder reactions or spin traps for radicals.
