Rescue effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010215
A phenomenon in metapopulation dynamics where a declining local population is saved from extinction by immigration from other, more stable populations. This influx of individuals increases the size and genetic diversity of the threatened subpopulation, enhancing its viability. The effect is a key consideration in conservation biology and ecotoxicology, as habitat fragmentation can prevent this natural recovery mechanism.
