MacArthur-Wilson model

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006858

A model of island biogeography that explains species richness on an island as a dynamic equilibrium between immigration and extinction rates. The rate of immigration of new species decreases as the island's species richness increases, while the rate of extinction increases with rising species richness. This equilibrium number of species is affected by the island's size (larger islands have lower extinction rates) and its distance from the mainland (closer islands have higher immigration rates).
