Wahlund effect
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012631
A phenomenon observed in population genetics where a reduction in heterozygosity occurs when a population is subdivided into smaller, isolated subpopulations, each with different allele frequencies. Even if each subpopulation is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, the overall population will show a deficit of heterozygotes. This effect can be used to detect population structure.
