Sentinel species
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010752
An organism that provides an early warning of environmental contamination or health hazards due to its sensitivity to pollutants or its close association with human populations. These species are monitored for changes in health, behavior, or population dynamics. For example, canaries were historically used in coal mines to detect toxic gases.
