Shotgun method
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010831
A strategy for determining the base sequence of long DNA in which the DNA is broken at random into many small segments, each segment is sequenced, and the overlaps between the resulting reads are used to assemble the original long sequence by computer. The same name is used for shotgun proteomics, where a protein mixture is digested into peptides before analysis. Whole-genome shotgun sequencing was used for the Celera draft of the human genome.
