Size effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010920

The phenomenon where the physical or chemical properties of a material change significantly as its dimensions approach the nanoscale. This effect arises when the characteristic length scale of the material becomes comparable to fundamental physical lengths, such as the de Broglie wavelength of electrons or the exciton Bohr radius. Quantum confinement and increased surface-to-volume ratio are common causes of size effects in nanomaterials.
