Stokes number

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011438

A dimensionless quantity representing the ratio of the stopping distance of a particle to a characteristic dimension of an obstacle in a fluid. It characterizes the behavior of an aerosol particle in a non-uniform gas flow. A very small Stokes number indicates the particle follows the fluid flow, while a large number indicates the particle continues on its original path due to inertia.
