Sedimentation

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010648

The process by which particles suspended in a fluid settle out due to the force of gravity or centrifugal force. This phenomenon is widely used in chemistry for separating mixtures, clarifying liquids, and analyzing particle size distributions. The rate of sedimentation depends on particle size, density, and the viscosity of the fluid, as described by Stokes' Law.
