Trace element

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012186

An element present in a sample at a very low concentration, insufficient to be considered a major or minor constituent of the matrix. The concentration is typically below 100 parts per million (ppm) or 100 micrograms per gram. The precise concentration threshold distinguishing a trace element from a minor element is not universally fixed and depends on the context of the analysis and the sample matrix.
