Withdrawal effect

The physiological and psychological disturbances experienced by an individual upon cessation or reduction of a substance after a period of dependence. These effects are a direct consequence of the body's adaptation to the substance and its subsequent attempt to re-establish normal function. The specific symptoms are characteristic of the substance involved, such as tremors from alcohol withdrawal.
