Yolk sac
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012784
An extraembryonic membrane that develops early in embryonic development, providing nutrients to the embryo and serving as an initial site for hematopoiesis. In mammals, it is transient and contributes to the formation of the primitive gut and germ cells. In birds and reptiles, it is a large structure filled with yolk that sustains the embryo throughout incubation.
