Holoblastic cleavage

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005342

A pattern of early embryonic cleavage in which the cleavage furrows pass completely through the egg, dividing the zygote into separate blastomeres. It occurs in eggs with little yolk, such as those of mammals and sea urchins, and in eggs with a moderate amount of yolk, such as those of amphibians, where the yolk-rich vegetal blastomeres are larger. It contrasts with meroblastic cleavage, in which a large yolk mass stays undivided, as in birds and fish.
