Halftone
Term · Computing and IT · MLC-T-CMP-000502
A method for reproducing an image with continuous tones, such as a photograph, using a pattern of solid-colored dots that vary in size or spacing. The human eye blends these discrete dots into smooth gradients and shades, creating an illusion of more colors or grays than are physically present. The density of dots in a halftone image is measured in lines per inch (LPI), with newspapers using a coarse screen of 85 LPI and glossy magazines using a finer screen of 150 LPI or higher.
