Anharmonicity
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000207
The deviation of an oscillator from simple harmonic motion, where the restoring force is not directly proportional to the displacement. This phenomenon results in the oscillation frequency changing with amplitude, and the presence of overtones that are not integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. Anharmonicity is observed in physical systems such as vibrating molecules and mechanical resonators, influencing their energy absorption and emission characteristics.
