Backbore
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000368
To enlarge the diameter of a previously drilled hole from the side opposite to its initial entry. This machining operation is performed to create a recess for a fastener head, a shoulder for a bearing, or to reduce the weight of a component without affecting the entry-side diameter. Backboring requires specialized tooling that can be inserted through the existing hole and then expanded to cut the larger diameter.
