Canopy

The upper layer of a forest, formed by the collective crowns of mature trees. This layer intercepts the majority of sunlight, which influences the temperature, humidity, and light conditions on the forest floor, creating a distinct microclimate. Canopy closure, the percentage of the ground covered by the tree crowns, is a key metric in assessing forest density and health.
