Clearing
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001151
The process of interrupting the flow of current in a circuit, specifically to isolate a fault condition such as a short circuit or overload. Protective devices like circuit breakers, fuses, or relays perform this action automatically upon detecting abnormal currents to de-energize the faulted section of the electrical system. The total clearing time for a fault is the sum of the time it takes the protective relay to operate and the time the circuit breaker takes to open its contacts and extinguish the arc.
