Engine braking
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002034
The retarding force created within an internal combustion engine when the throttle is closed, causing the vehicle to slow down without applying the brakes. This effect occurs as the wheels turn the engine's crankshaft against its internal friction and the vacuum created in the intake manifold. The effect is more pronounced in lower gears due to higher engine revolutions per minute (RPM) and is a standard technique for controlling speed on long downhill grades.
