The operating state of an engine when it is running at its lowest rotational speed without any load applied, typically with the throttle closed. In this condition, the engine produces just enough power to overcome its internal friction and drive accessories like the alternator or water pump. The idle speed for most automotive engines is around 600 to 1000 revolutions per minute.
