An abbreviation for Revolutions Per Minute, a unit measuring the rotational speed of a component. In rail applications, it quantifies the speed of a diesel engine's crankshaft, an electric traction motor's rotor, or the axles of the rolling stock. The relationship between motor RPM, gear ratio, and wheel diameter determines the train's linear speed.
