Fresnel number
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002455
A dimensionless quantity that characterizes the diffraction effects of an aperture or obstacle in an optical system. It compares the size of the aperture to the wavelength of light and the distance to the observation point. A Fresnel number much greater than one indicates that geometric optics provides a good approximation, while values near or less than one suggest wave optics effects dominate.
