Gauge
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002531
A measure of the fineness of a knitted fabric, set by the number of needles per unit length in the needle bed of a knitting machine, counted per inch or per 1.5 inches depending on the machine type. A higher gauge number means more needles in the same length, producing a finer, denser and lighter fabric. For example, a 12-gauge sweater is finer than a 7-gauge one.
