An acronym for Gas Insulated Switchgear, a type of high-voltage electrical equipment where conductive components and circuit interrupters are enclosed in a sealed environment with a dielectric gas. The insulating medium is typically sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), which has superior dielectric properties compared to air, allowing for a much more compact design. GIS installations are common in substations where space is limited, such as in urban areas, or in environments where exposure to pollution and moisture is a concern.
