Hydrostatic lock

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002945

A condition in an internal combustion engine where an incompressible fluid, such as water or coolant, enters a cylinder and prevents the piston from completing its compression stroke. Since the fluid cannot be compressed, the piston's upward movement is abruptly halted, which can cause severe mechanical damage to connecting rods, crankshaft, or cylinder walls. This often occurs when an engine ingests water through the air intake or due to a failed head gasket.
