Interstage

A structural section connecting two stages of a multi-stage rocket, designed to separate cleanly during flight to allow the next stage to ignite. This component typically houses the separation mechanisms and sometimes the engine nozzle of the upper stage. The interstage is jettisoned after its function is complete to reduce overall vehicle mass.
