Lanarkshire disease

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003238

A wasting disease affecting ruminants, particularly sheep and cattle, caused by a dietary deficiency of the trace element cobalt. The condition leads to poor appetite, weight loss, anemia, and general weakness, as the animal is unable to synthesize vitamin B12, for which cobalt is a necessary component. It is also known as pine or vinquish and is prevalent in regions with cobalt-deficient soils, such as parts of Scotland where the name originated.
