To reduce the oxygen content in molten copper by stirring it with green wood poles. The hydrocarbons released from the wood react with dissolved oxygen, forming gases that escape from the melt. This process is used to achieve the desired oxygen level for tough-pitch copper, which has specific electrical conductivity requirements.
