Rib
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004842
A raised, elongated structural feature designed to add strength and stiffness to a part without significantly increasing its overall weight or material volume. Ribs are incorporated into the design of injection-molded plastic parts, metal castings, and fabricated sheet metal components to prevent bending, warping, or vibration. In plastic part design, the thickness of a rib is specified as a fraction of the nominal wall thickness, usually between 40% and 60%, to avoid cosmetic defects like sink marks.
