A highly vesicular, dark-colored volcanic rock formed from basaltic or andesitic lava, characterized by its rough, jagged texture and numerous gas bubbles. In metallurgy, the term can also refer to a porous, slag-like waste product from smelting operations, resembling volcanic scoria. This material is often a byproduct of extracting metals from their ores.
