Slingshot effect

A gravitational assist maneuver used by spacecraft to gain or lose speed and change direction without expending propellant. The spacecraft passes close to a planet or other celestial body, using its gravity to alter the trajectory and velocity. This technique is employed for interplanetary missions to reach distant targets.
