Strand
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005697
A single, thin filament of conductive material, such as copper or aluminum, that is twisted or bundled with other similar filaments to create a stranded conductor. This construction provides greater flexibility and resistance to metal fatigue from vibration compared to a solid-core wire of the same cross-sectional area. The American Wire Gauge (AWG) standard specifies stranded wire by its overall gauge and its stranding, such as 18 AWG (16/30), which indicates 16 strands of 30 AWG wire.
