Trumpeting

A wooden conduit or pipe used to convey air for ventilation into a mine shaft or heading, particularly in older mining systems. This ductwork, often square in cross-section and made of planks, would be connected to a ventilation furnace or fan to direct a flow of fresh air to the working face. The term is also used for the widening, funnel-like shape at the top of a pipe or shaft.
