Whisker
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006586
A single-crystal filament of metal or ceramic, typically very thin and strong, that grows from a surface. These microscopic structures possess exceptionally high tensile strength due to their perfect crystalline lattice and lack of defects. Whiskers can form spontaneously on certain metals, like tin, and can cause electrical shorts in electronic components.
