Windage
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006610
A form of parasitic power loss in an internal combustion engine caused by the rotating crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons churning the air and oil mist inside the crankcase. This churning creates drag and requires engine power that would otherwise be sent to the drivetrain. Crankcase modifications, such as scraper plates and specially shaped oil pans, are used to reduce this effect and recover horsepower.
