Wort

The sweet, malty liquid extracted from the mashing process in brewing, containing sugars, amino acids, and other nutrients derived from malted grains. This liquid is boiled with hops and then cooled before yeast is added to initiate fermentation. Wort is the precursor to beer, with its composition determining many characteristics of the final product.
