Abuse of discretion

A standard of review used by appellate courts to determine if a lower court's decision was unreasonable or arbitrary, rather than based on sound legal judgment. It occurs when a judge makes a ruling that is clearly erroneous or exceeds the bounds of reason. This standard gives trial judges considerable leeway in their decisions.
