Cy pres: charitable trusts

A legal doctrine that allows a court to modify the terms of a charitable trust when the original charitable purpose becomes impossible, impracticable, or illegal to fulfill. The court will direct the trust property to a purpose as near as possible to the original intent of the settlor. This doctrine prevents charitable trusts from failing due to changed circumstances.
