Cy pres doctrine

A legal principle that allows a court to modify the terms of a charitable trust or will when the original purpose becomes impossible or impractical to fulfill. The court redirects the funds or property to a new purpose that is as close as possible to the donor's original charitable intent. This doctrine prevents charitable gifts from failing entirely due to changed circumstances.
