Frustration of purpose

A legal doctrine that excuses a party from contractual obligations when an unforeseen event occurs that fundamentally undermines the principal purpose of the contract, even if performance remains physically possible. The event must be unforeseeable at the time of contracting and render the contract's value to one party virtually worthless. This doctrine is distinct from impossibility of performance.
