Defensive collateral estoppel

A legal doctrine that prevents a plaintiff from relitigating an issue that the plaintiff has previously litigated and lost against a different defendant. This doctrine promotes judicial efficiency and prevents a plaintiff from repeatedly suing different parties on the same factual or legal issue. It differs from offensive collateral estoppel, where a plaintiff seeks to prevent a defendant from relitigating an issue the defendant previously lost.
