Collateral source rule

A legal principle preventing a defendant from reducing the amount of damages owed to a plaintiff because the plaintiff received compensation for the same injury from another source. This rule applies to benefits such as insurance payments, workers' compensation, or gratuitous payments from third parties. Its purpose is to prevent the defendant from benefiting from the plaintiff's foresight in obtaining insurance or from the generosity of others.
