Digital signature

A mathematical scheme for demonstrating the authenticity of a digital message or document. It provides assurance to the recipient that the message was created by a known sender and was not altered in transit. This technology uses cryptographic techniques to bind an identity to a digital transaction, often regulated by statutes such as the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN Act) in the United States.
