Dog-bite statute

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001723

A state law that imposes strict liability on dog owners for injuries caused by their dogs, regardless of whether the owner knew of the dog's dangerous propensities. Unlike common law, which often required proof of a dog's prior viciousness, these statutes simplify the process for victims to recover damages. Many states have adopted some form of a dog-bite statute, though specific provisions vary.
